Voting in the PokerStars Big 20 Players Awards is open, with PokerStars players and fans invited to nominate their favourite moments from 20 years of televised play. Feast your eyes on 50 memorable moments in 10 categories, then pick your best. Today’s category: Hero Folds

Throwing away your cards in poker is always tough, but it’s especially difficult when you have a monster. However sometimes there’s just that niggling feeling that someone else has something even better… Here are five examples of when some top players have sniffed out trouble and somehow managed to stay in the game.

Who found the most heroic hero fold?

1. I HATE MYSELF: JOEP VAN DEN BIJGAART VS BEN WILINOFSKY

It’s the 2011 EPT Berlin Main Event and the Dutchman Joep Van Den Bijgaart has flopped top two pair against the big stack, all-action Ben Wilinofsky. Can Wilinofsky possibly have him beat? Van Den Bijgaart said that he hates himself, but when he saw the hand played back, he might have been more forgiving.

2. BUT HE’S A MIZRACHI: JOEL MICKA VS MIKE MIZRACHI

It’s hard enough to lay down trips at the best of times, but what about when your opponent is the bluff-happy Michael Mizrachi? Joel Micka found himself with a super tough decision at the PCA Main Event in 2013. Could he find the hero fold?

3. WHY SO LARGE?: GALEN HALL VS CHRIS OLIVER

Again we’re at the PCA Main Event, this time in 2011, and Galen Hall has rivered a monster. But Chris Oliver has rivered an even bigger one. How did Hall sniff this one out?

4. YOU’RE A WIZARD: IKE HAXTON VS MARIA HO

Of all the wizards playing high stakes poker these days, Ike Haxton is among the most magical. Here’s an example of Haxton’s incredible sorcery: he somehow wriggles away from a full house, even though this is a format — the PokerStars Shark Cage — where there’s an extra incentive for bluffers.

5. HOW GOOD CAN YOU RUN?: DANY PARLAFES VS OGNYAN DIMOV

Nuts versus second nuts, heads up for an EPT title. How can you possibly get away from it? That’s the question everyone was asking as somehow Dany Parlafes lived to fight another day after this cooler against Ognyan Dimov in Deauville.
