Brazilian Series of Poker returns with record-breaking BSOP Millions in São Paulo

December 09, 2021inPoker

The PokerStars Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) has been on the rail, so to speak, for nearly two years — in terms of live events, that is (there has been plenty of BSOP Online action during that time).

But the BSOP is back on the road, and the comeback was amazing!

The BSOP Millions typically concludes a BSOP season as the series’ flagship festival. This time it served as a welcome back event as well as a preview for the 2022 BSOP season.

The series ran from November 24 to December 5 at the WTC Sheraton São Paulo Golden Hall. Players came not just from Brazil but from all over, including from Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Equator, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, UK, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Guaranteed prize pools across the 50-event series added up to 15M Reais (about $2.7M USD). However with more than 25,000 entries they ended up totaling more than R$ 40.5M (about $7.4M USD)!

Many of those who comprised the 4,500-plus unique entries were first-timers at the BSOP. Almost 2,000, in fact, played their first BSOP event during the series.

Some of those were the 239 PokerStars qualifiers (76 package winners + 163 seat-only winners) who won their way into the BSOP Millions Main Event via online satellites.

Speaking of the Main Event, the R$ 3,500 tournament had 4,115 total entries, setting a new record for the series. In fact, the R$ 11.6M prize pool (worth about $2.1M USD) establishes a new record as the largest prize pool ever for a poker tournament in Latin America.

André Berlanda took away the title and top prize of R$ 1.5M after outlasting Mauricio Farias heads-up to win.

Another standout event on the schedule was the R$ 800 Start-Up tournament that drew 4,161 total entries, making it the largest field ever for a poker tournament in Latin America and only the second-ever to have more than 4,000 entries.

The Brazilian Series of Poker returns in 2022 with the BSOP Brasilia series running February 10-15. Online satellites have already begun on PokerStars.
