Before there was ElkY the rockstar poker player, before he found a way to dismay and dismantle poker convention, before poker players became better known by their screen names as their given name (and, who is this Bertrand Grospellier guy I’ve been hearing about?), ElkY was a rockstar in another world. On the streets of Seoul where pro-gamers are celebrities, ElkY was royalty.

That gaming world was perfect for the technology we now know as Twitch, a platform where legions of fans can feel up close and personal with their heroes as they suffer the slings and arrows of virtual combat in real time. It was, simply put, a platform that might as well have been built just for ElkY.

So, it should come as no surprise that in the short time since the likes of Jason Somerville, Jaime Staples, Daniel Negreanu, and even (gasp with us) Jason Mercier started using Twitch to broadcast their poker exploits, ElkY has emerged as a record-holder.

Earlier this week, ElkY made a final table and won nearly $80,000. You know who has won more money that that playing poker on Twitch?

Nobody. That’s who.

Yes, Negreanu emerged as the early leader with a $50,000 cash-game win in his early exploits, but ElkY (as he is wont to do) one-upped Kid Poker and put his flag at the top of the Twitch-winning mountain.

This is not necessarily new territory for ElkY. When there is a record to be broken or milestone to be met, he often jumps at the challenge. In 2006, he was PokerStars’ first Supernova. In 2007, he became the first-ever Supernova Elite.

Now, he’s set the bar for poker on Twitch. (You can see a replay of it here.)

Here’s the thing, though. There is a lot of money left to be won in the Spring Championship of Online Poker, and there are lots of people Twitching these days.

What do you think the chances are of ElkY’s record being broken within a week? Let us know on Twitter at our @PokerStarsBlog account.
