Maria Maceiras has made a name for herself over the year and a half, triumphing in the Spanish Championship and coming second in a Spanish Poker Tour event before being named Spanish Player of the Year. In San Remo though her day has been marked by frustration.

After an early set back Maceiras has worked a short stack, getting her chips all-in but splitting a pot, and then again only to get no takers. Heading to the break she has 6,000.

Elsewhere Dag Palovic, a finalist from last year has had a similar start to last. Twelve months ago Palavic began by knocking out Julian Thew in the second level. This year he did it to Bill Chen, well almost, crippling the American.

While Palavic beams Rasmus Nielsen’s tournament life got a extension. He moved all in with pocket queens, called by Andrea Benelli with jacks. The queens were good for the Dane who moves back up to 12,500. Benelli’s fortunes weren’t hampered too much – he has close to 40,000.
