Home / Uncategorized / EPT10 Barcelona: It ain’t over until the fat lady stops singing*

Is it ever a good thing when your friends on the rail start to sing in your honour?

Nicalau Villa-Lobos from Brazil has that question to think about. He’s in seat one on the table closest to the rail. That means he’s within easy sight of his four pals who are cheering his every step towards EPT glory, to go with the UKIPT glory he already earned in Edinburgh in January of this year.

This is not the fat lady

But are his chances improved or hindered by this chorus of approval? Actually, Barcelona has some history in this department.

Two years ago German player Martin Schleich surprised spectators, the press, and himself, to win the Barcelona Main Event, a monumental task given that it didn’t finish until around 4am. Schleich though was cheered home by his hired friends who, encouraged with a combination of hops, sugar and water, sang football chants in an effort to bring their boy home – including the now Super High Roller Ole Schemion.

The British have lots of experience of this, particularly at the World Series, where a potential bracelet winners are carried to the title on a wave of Jagermeister, served in a glass, shoe, or box, either is apparently fine, disregarding pleas from staff, and the winner himself, to keep it down.

So the evidence suggests it’s a good thing. The “Chorus Villa-Lobos” sings on.

* There was no fat lady in the Chorus. Or any thin ones.
