It’s hard to imagine what sort of phone call you could receive while playing the main event that meant you had to apologise. But Jens Lakemeier just got it.

“I’m sorry, but I’m still in the Main Event,” said Lakemeier.

Everyone listened, maybe even trying to work out for themselves who he was talking to. Family and friends would surely appreciate the seriousness of a deep run in an EPT main event, while a professional caller might not realise what it was. Or maybe cold callers do?

Regardless, this came after Lakemeier missed the first ten minutes of the level. Niall Farrell sought to reassure him after the absence.
“You missed your big blind,” said Farrell. “But I had aces, so it’s okay.”

Farrell did have aces, and won a good sized pot with them. Before that though he’d pulled off a big bluff against Lakemeier, one that might well signal the type of day the Scot was about to have.

Ironically this wasn’t dramatic enough to stop half his table leaping up to watch an all-in called on the other table, so what happened next happened without much of an audience. But after some heavy breathing, signing and shrugging, Lakemeier folded.

“Show the bluff,” said Mike McDonald, on Farrell’s left. McDonald exhaled when Farrell did show, turning over Q♠ J♠ . He seemed as relieved as McDonald was surprised.

“I wasn’t happy about it,” admitted Farrell.

It was a big bluff, but a sign that things are going well for Farrell.

If anyone’s trying to call him, he’s very much still in the main event.
