Indian bracelet winner discusses gender diversity in poker

This week The Hindustan Times organized a virtual panel discussion featuring participants discussing women in poker. An Indian-English publication based in New Dehli, The Hindustan Times is one of India’s largest newspapers.

The webinar was titled “Stakes Over Stereotypes,” and among the participants was World Series of Poker bracelet winner Nikita Luther.

Luther was the first woman from India ever to win a bracelet and just the second from India overall, picking hers up in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Tag Team event in 2018. In the webinar Luther shared her experience getting involved in poker and finding both success and challenges associated with being a woman in a so-called “man’s game.”

“I received a lot of judgment initially,” she explains, referring as well to public perception about poker and gambling, generally speaking. She adds, however, that over the four years since she got into the game, opinions have started to change.

“People’s reactions these days have taken a 180 degree turn,” she says. “They have realised that becoming a doctor or an engineer isn’t the be-all and end-all of everybody’s aspirations. Now, I am considered inspiring and courageous for doing what I do.”
