Home / Uncategorized / LAPT6 Chile: Mayol leads; Barbero looks for Number Three

With all due respect to Jaime Zamanillo Mayol, the chip leader of final table of the 2013 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Chile National Poker Championship, this post is not going to be about him. I’m sure Sr. Mayol will understand. He was at the last two tables. He saw how Team PokerStars Pro Jose “Nacho” Barbero built a huge stack with aggressive play and by running hotter than the sun; gave a bunch of it back; and then salvaged what could have been disaster with a turn card plucked from the sky.

Daedalus isn’t plummeting to earth just yet.

But first, let’s introduce Sr. Mayol. His right, honor and privilege as the final table chip leader demands a photo in this blog post.

Now let me back up and set the stage. The tournament was down to its final nine players, two of whom were short: Brazil’s Leonardo Martins and Chile’s Gonzalo Farias. After reaching a high-water mark of about 3.7 million, Barbero couldn’t seem to buy a pot. He’d fallen back to the pack with a stack of about 2.2 million when he opened a pot to 105,000 from middle position. Sitting in position, Farias called.

The flop fell 6♠ 8♣ 7♥ . Barbero warily checked to the short-stacked Faris, who obligingly moved all in. Barbero asked for a count. The dealer counted down 470,000.

“Wow,” said Barbero. He scrunched up his face as he often does when he’s considering what to do. He started talking to no one in particular, said “wow” again, and may even have said “sick.” After about two minutes, he called. Farias rolled over Aâ™  8â™  , top pair and top kicker. Barbero grimaced. He could only muster A♣ 4♣ and was drawing thin.

Cue the turn: 5♣ , filling Barbero’s inside straight. Instead of falling down to 1.6 million, Barbero was on the verge of climbing back to 2.8 million. That’s exactly what he did when Farias missed his own inside straight for a chop on the river.

“Ole, ole, ole, ole. Ole, Nacho!” came the cries from offstage.

For the fifth time in his career, Barbero will play on the LAPT’s biggest stage: the final table of an LAPT Main Event. The four previous times Barbero’s been here, he finished 9th, 1st, 1st and 6th. That’s right, he has two wins. He’s the only double winner in the history of the LAPT and he won those titles back-to-back in Season 3.

The 6th place finish, by the way, was at the LAPT’s most recent event, the Season 5 Grand Final in Lima last November. So for the second time in his career, Barbero has made back-to-back LAPT final tables. In Lima, he started the final table 7th in chips. Tomorrow he’ll be second, behind Sr. Mayol.

The rest of the final table will look like this:

Seat 1: Sebastian Marcel Miranda (Argentina) – 1,505,000
Seat 2: Alejandro Cholakis (Chile) – 1,290,000
Seat 3: Leonardo Martins (Brazil) – 440,000
Seat 4: Jaime Zamanillo Mayol (Chile) – 3,400,000
Seat 5: Sergio Braga (Brazil) – 1,465,000
Seat 6: Pablo Alexander Tavitian (Argentina) – 1,915,000
Seat 7: Fernando Javier Gordo (Argentina) – 2,225,000
Seat 8: Jose “Nacho” Barbero (Argentina) – 2,850,000
