It’s just over three months since the final hand was dealt in the PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event, and much has changed since Irishman Dermot Blain took down the opening event on season three of Asia’s largest and most prestigious poker tour.
The heat and humidity of spring has given way to the cool and gray of winter, more new casinos have opened their doors while the stature and reputation of Asia’s premier land-based poker facility has reached unprecedented heights.
Welcome to PokerStars Macau at the magnificent Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino where Asia’s poker world have gathered for the Macau Poker Cup Championship (MPCC). The MPCC is the culmination of the year with nine days of exciting tournament poker highlighted by the MPCC Main Event, Tournament of Champions and Asia Poker Awards.
Since the first No Limit Hold’em poker tournament was played here in November 2007 – the APPT Macau: Asia Poker Open – the game was slowly gained a foothold in the world’s gaming capital.
The seeds sown by the APPT have blossomed thanks to the tender care provided by the team at PokerStars Macau, and the Macau Poker Cup has become the cornerstone of this thriving poker market.
The Macau Poker Cup (MPC) series has experienced spectacular growth in the past year. The signature tournament, the HKD $10,000 buy-in Red Dragon event, attracted a modest field 57 players, with a prize pool of approximately HKD $500,000, in December 2008. In October 2009, these numbers soared to 247 players and a HKD $2.3 million prize pool. The HKD $20,000 buy-in MPCC Main Event, which kicks-off in the next hour, is expected to write another chapter in the MPC history books.
PokerStars Macau at the Grand Lisboa will also play host to the Asia Poker Awards on the final day of MPCC. After nine days and eight numbered events, the Asia Player of the Year will be announced. The awards ceremony will also celebrate the winners of the Tournament of Champions and MPCC Main Event.
But before the champagne corks are popped tomorrow night, Asia’s best players, highlighted by PokerStars.net Team Asia Pros Bryan Huang, Celina Lin, Raymond Wu, Jonathan Lin, Tae Jun Noh and Daniel Schreiber will be battling it out for the last major title of 2009 – the Macau Poker Cup Championship Main Event crown.
