On July 24, Queenstown, New Zealand, becomes the home of the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour. The APPT’s stop in Queenstown runs from July 23 though 29 at the SkyCity Queenstown Casino.

Queenstown is the “Adventure Capital of the World,” so while you’re there for some action on the felt, you’ll want to get in on the action off the felt as well. We’ll tell you how to do that, but first, here are the basics:

  • Language: English
  • Currency: New Zealand Dollar ($1USD = $1.2NZD)
  • Weather: Cold
  • Time zone: GMT +12
  • Electricity: 240 volts
  • Taxi: +64 3 442 7788
  • SkyCity Queenstown
  • Email: info@skycityqueenstown.co.nz
  • PokerStars Qualifier Hotel
  • Phone: (+64) 3/4427750
  • Email: h5308-re01@accor.com
  • Minimum Age: 20
  • Dress Code: Smart Casual (no shorts, sandals, sportswear, beach clothes, or ripped jeans)

Now that that’s out of the way, the APPT Queenstown Main Event features a NZD$3,000 buy-in and has three day ones. There are a number of other events on the schedule as well, ranging in buy-in from NZD$440 to NZD$1,100.

If you bust early, or play Day 1a and have a few days off, you might find yourself looking to scratch that adrenaline itch. You can do that in a number of different ways including the AJ Hackett Bungy, Shotover Canyon Swing, and the Shotover Jet. For something a little more land-based, you could try target shooting at Break One Clay Target Sports or Nomad Safaris. And after a long day of the poker grind, or death-defying jumps, you can relax at the Onsen Hot Pools.

If you’re a foodie, there are a number of amazing places to grub. Fergburger has some of the best burgers in New Zealand and it’s right across the street from SkyCity – can you say late night burger run? If you’re looking for something a little fancier, you could try the Skyline Restaurant. To get to it, you have to ride a gondola to the top of the mountain, and then you’ll dine while looking out at the Remarkables Ranges.

There’s plenty to do in Queenstown, and getting there is as easy as qualifying on PokerStars. Hope to see you there!
