It must be that I’m getting old. (In fact, let’s just say it: It’s because I’m getting old.)
But I remember a time when the World Series of Poker introduced a $50,000 buy-in tournament, and everyone was like, “Damn, man. Fifty K? Really, dog? You might be pushing it a little bit here.”
We set up special coverage. We brought in people from around the world to cover it. It was a big damned deal.
These days, $50,000 doesn’t seem like that big of a buy-in anymore. Nevertheless, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship is still the highlight for a lot of the heavyweights in the game.

Yesterday, the $50K PPC finished Day 1 with nearly all of its players still in contention. Among the 87 players who bagged their stacks sit some members of the Red Spade Brigade.
Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier is the top Team Pro in the field. With the average stack sitting at 267,000, ElkY has 367,900. Not too far behind sits Daniel Negreanu with 360,100 and Jason Mercier on 325,700.
While they are all sitting above average, the event is still deep enough that it’s anybody’s game. That’s why we’re also still keeping an eye on Felipe Ramos. His day wasn’t as good yesterday, but he still bagged up 160,300. That’s enough to keep him in the game and give him a chance to run up a stack today.

This weekend, the Sunday Million did something a little special and randomly awarded PokerStars Championship Barcelona satellite tickets. Fifty minutes into the event, tickets started going out to random seats. After that, however, it was was back to competing for the $180,000 first prize.
