Chelsea – Season Preview

Nickname: The Blues
Stadium: Stamford Bridge (Capacity 41,837)
Manager: Thomas Tuchel (GER)
Last Season: 3rd

Notable Transfers

IN OUT
Raheem Sterling (Man City) €56.2m Romelu Lukaku (Inter) Loan
Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli) €38m Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid) Free
Andreas Christensen (Barcelona) Free
One to Watch: Raheem Sterling

Despite a quieter 21-22 season, there can be no doubts about Raheem Sterling’s ability. With 109 goals and 56 assists to his name in the league, Chelsea have signed a top-quality, Premier League-proven winger with bags of pace and an eye for goal. If he can replicate the same form he’s shown previously under Pep Guardiola, he’ll prove to be a lethal asset for Chelsea.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 3-4-3

Wing-backs are vital cogs in Tuchel’s Chelsea. When needed, they provide a deep block during defensive phases and transform from a 3-4-3 to a solid 5-4-1 shape. The full-backs also provide ample opportunity for fluid passing lanes and triangles to open up as they advance up the pitch, often rotating with the two number 10s as they go. This vital aspect of Chelsea’s play creates space in behind for the attackers to run into, or an overlap where the likes of Alonso and James can cut the ball back into the paths of Mount and Havertz, often in devastating fashion.

First Five Fixtures

Everton (A) A potentially tricky start for Chelsea. The last time they visited Goodison, ex-club legend Frank Lampard took all three points in a 1-0 victory.
Tottenham (H) Stamford Bridge hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Tottenham in recent years; they haven’t beaten Chelsea at the Bridge since April 2018.
Leeds United (A) Chelsea battered Leeds in a 3-0 rout last season at Elland Road, and will be favourites going into this match too.
Leicester (H) Leicester managed a draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge thanks to an early James Maddison goal; will it be spoils shared again?
Southampton (A) Southampton will be looking for revenge after being mauled 6-0 by Chelsea last season, but the Saints go into the game as clear underdogs.

Chelsea Prediction: 4th

Chelsea are a strong side, and have a top-class manager in Thomas Tuchel. But they’re fighting against two titans of world football: Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. They’re also up against Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United sides that have all strengthened considerably over the summer. It’s going to be a tough ask for Chelsea to challenge for the title, but they may prove to be the best of the rest.

Can Chelsea challenge for the league title this season?

Chelsea to win the Premier League: 17:00

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Chelsea still hold the record for the longest unbeaten run at home in English top-flight football, going a staggering 86 games without losing at Stamford Bridge. The run began in 2004 and ended when they finally tasted defeat to Liverpool in 2008.
