Everton – Season Preview

Nickname: The Toffees
Stadium: Goodison Park (Capacity 39,572)
Manager: Frank Lampard (ENG)
Last Season: 16th

Notable Transfers

James Tarkowski (Burnley) Free Richarlison (Tottenham) €58m
Cenk Tosun (Besiktas) Free
Jonjoe Kenny (Hertha BSC) Free
One to Watch: Anthony Gordon

In a dismal season for Everton, Anthony Gordon was a shining light. The academy graduate picked up both the Players' Player of The Season and the Young Player of The Season awards last term and he’ll look to kick on in this campaign. Gordon has been handed the No.10 shirt and he’s undoubtedly a pivotal part of Frank Lampard’s short and long-term plans.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 4-3-3

Frank Lampard experimented with eight different formations in six months as Everton battled towards eventual safety last season, so it’s difficult to predict how he’ll set up this season. However, as manager of Derby County and Chelsea, Lampard’s preferred formation was 4-3-3 and it’s likely he’ll revert back to this system. Last season’s top goalscorer Richarlison will be a big miss for the Toffees and a potential front three of Anthony Gordon, Demarai Gray and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be tasked with replacing his goals. The addition of James Tarkowski at the back should help stabilise a defence which had a torrid time last season.

First Five Fixtures

Chelsea (H) Everton’s 1-0 home win over Chelsea last season was a crucial victory in their fight for survival.
Aston Villa (A) This will be the first time Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have met as Managers.
Nottingham Forest (H) These two sides last met in 1999 and Forest took all 3 points at Goodison Park.
Brentford (H) Brentford did the league double over Everton last season, but Lampard’s side did sting the Bees in the FA Cup winning 4-1 back in February.
Leeds United (A) Everton finished just one point ahead of Leeds last season as both sides narrowly missed out on relegation.

Everton Prediction: 16th

It’s no secret that the Toffees massively underperformed last season. And due to the departure of Richarlison and just one key summer signing, it’s hard to envisage a dramatic change of fortunes in this campaign.

However, there are some positive signs for Everton fans. If results were taken from Lampard’s appointment onwards, the Toffees would have finished 13th. Everton’s home form under Lampard was a key factor in helping them maintain top flight status. Out of Lampard’s 9 home games, the Toffees won 5 and the Goodison faithful will be expecting more of the same this season.

Will Everton be dragged into another relegation battle this season?

Everton to be relegated: 3.90

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Last season’s 39 points total was the joint lowest in Everton’s 144-year history.
