Leeds United – Season Preview

Nickname: The Whites
Stadium: Elland Road (Capacity 37,890)
Manager: Jesse Marsch (USA)
Last Season: 17th

Notable Transfers

Brenden Aaronson (Red Bull Salzburg) €32.9m Raphinha (Barcelona) €58m
Luis Sinisterra (Feyenoord) €25m Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City) €48.8m
Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig) €17m Charlie Cresswell (Millwall) Loan
Marc Roca (Bayern Munich) €12m Jamie Shackleton (Millwall) Loan
Rasmus Kristensen (Red Bull Salzburg) €13m Tyler Roberts (QPR) Loan
One to Watch: Brenden Aaronson

Leeds wasted no time completing a deal for Brenden Aaronson, who signed for the Yorkshire outfit just 24 hours after their top-flight status was secured at the end of last term. The 21-year-old USA international will bring some much-needed flair and creativity to the Whites’ midfield.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 4-2-2-2

Leeds’ chaotic ‘man-to-man’ tactics under former boss Marcelo Bielsa are a thing of the past. Expect new manager Jesse Marsch to fully deploy his preferred 4-2-2-2 system, with firm emphasis on collective ball pressing, counter pressing and quick, direct attacks through the centre. A double pivot will break up play and protect the Whites’ suspect backline, with the full backs encouraged to get forward when in possession to compensate for the system’s general lack of width.

First Five Fixtures

Wolves (H) Leeds ran out 3-2 winners at Molineux  last year but hadn’t beaten Wolves in the six previous meetings.
Southampton (A) Leeds collected just one point from the sides’ two meetings last term.
Chelsea (H) The Whites last beat Chelsea in 2002, losing six of the last eight meetings.
Brighton (A) Leeds have won just one of the sides’ last 11 clashes, losing eight.
Everton (H) The teams met early in the last campaign at Elland Road, drawing 2-2.

Leeds United Prediction: 14th

Leeds narrowly survived the drop last season but shaped with more stability and promise since Jesse Marsch’s arrival, claiming 15 points from their final 12 games. With full ‘Marschball’ now in operation and their squad bolstered by several exciting arrivals over the summer, the Whites should prove to be a more robust outfit this term. A relatively kind set of opening fixtures affords Leeds chance to put quick points on the board, so they could stay clear of a relegation dogfight this time around, without quite threatening a repeat of their top half finish in 2020/21.

Have Leeds strengthened enough, or will the Yorkshire outfit be fighting the drop again this season?

Leeds to be relegated: 3.25

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Leeds United were the last team to win the old ‘First Division’ championship in 1991/92, before the formation of the Premier League. Then manager Howard Wilkinson remains the last Englishman to win the top-flight.
