Tottenham Hotspur – Season Preview

Nickname: Spurs
Stadium: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Capacity 62,062)
Manager: Antonio Conte (ITA)
Last Season: 4th

Notable Transfers

IN OUT
Richarlison (Everton) €58m Steven Bergwijn (Ajax) €31.3m
Yves Bissouma (Brighton) €29.2m Cameron Carter Vickers (Celtic) €7m
Djed Spence (Middlesbrough) €14.7m Jack Clarke (Sunderland) Undisclosed
Ivan Perisic (Internazionale) Free
One to Watch: Ivan Perisic

While Spurs have spent big money on Richarlison this summer, it’s the arrival of Ivan Perisic that could prove to be Antonio Conte’s shrewdest transfer business. The Croatian international finally gets an opportunity to test himself in the Premier League and should give Spurs added pace and penetration down the left flank, despite his advancing years.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 3-4-3

Antonio Conte has transformed Spurs’ style and identity during his short time at the club. The Italian uses a 3-4-3 formation, with his side playing out from the back to induce the opposition press. Spurs often seek out target man Harry Kane who drops deep to create space for fellow attackers, while in wide areas, winger and wing-back combinations create penetrating overloads. Conte’s formation offers great flexibility when out of possession, with his side essentially banking up into a flat 5-4-1, making it extremely difficult for opposition attacks to break through the lines.

First Five Fixtures

Southampton (H) Both teams have scored in the last six meetings between the sides.
Chelsea (A) Chelsea have won the last five encounters between the teams without conceding a goal.
Wolves (H) Under 2.5 goals have been netted in four of the last five meetings.
Nottingham Forest (A) The teams last met in the 2014/15 League Cup, with Spurs triumphing 3-1.
West Ham (A) Spurs have lost on their last two visits to the London Stadium.

Tottenham Prediction: 3rd

Spurs secured Champions League qualification last term and look set to make steady, continued headway under Antonio Conte. The Italian has succeeded where recent predecessors have failed in terms of bringing results, consistency and a clear playing philosophy to the club, and they outshone rivals Chelsea towards the end of 2021/22, despite finishing just behind them in fourth. With some strong summer acquisitions to bolster the ranks and Harry Kane’s future now seemingly settled, expect Spurs to swap places with the Blues this season.

Will Spurs solidify their status as a top four this term?

Tottenham Top four finish: 1.85

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)
