Wolverhampton Wanderers – Season Preview

Nickname: Wolves
Stadium: Molineux Stadium (Capacity 32,050)
Manager: Bruno Lage (POR)
Last Season: 10th

Notable Transfers

Nathan Collins (Burnley) €24.3m Rúben Vinagre (Sporting CP) €10m
Hee-chan Hwang (RB Leipzig) €16.7m Romain Saïss (Besiktas) Free
Adama Traoré (Barcelona) Returned from loan Marçal (Botafogo) Free
One to Watch: Pedro Neto

The Portuguese international is definitely a player Wolves’ supporters look out for when the team sheet is confirmed. While the squad does have quality - João Moutinho and Rúben Neves, for example - it isn’t getting any younger, and Neto is a bright spark that has caught the eye in recent seasons. 2021/22 wasn’t his best campaign, only scoring a single Premier League goal and making 13 appearances, yet the dynamic winger has talent to burn and can easily be a regular fixture in the team if he performs consistently.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 3-5-2

The 3-5-2 formation Wolves implement is one of the reasons they have been successful under Bruno Lage. Not only does it provide the team with extra protection when defending, but it offers their best players time on the ball to pick out a teammate. Moutinho and Neves are excellent exponents of switching the play to start attacks, or to ease the pressure when they’re under the pump. A three-man midfield was crucial in securing excellent results against the likes of Chelsea and Man City last season. Although the formation doesn’t produce lots of chances, the fact they don’t concede many goals gives Wolves an excellent foundation to compete against any side in the league.

First Five Fixtures

Leeds United (A) Although Wolves have a historical winning record over Leeds, they failed to beat the Whites in two matches last term.
Fulham (H) Wolves are unbeaten in the last four Premier League meetings between the clubs. The most recent game ended 0-1 at Craven Cottage.
Tottenham (A) With three draws in 16 Premier League matches, this usually ends in a victory for either side. Last season, Wolves won away and lost at home.
Newcastle (H) Six of the previous ten matches between Wolves and Newcastle has finished in a draw, with 1-1 being the most common scoreline.
Bournemouth (A) This will be only the fifth time Wolves and Bournemouth have played one another in the Premier League. Wolves haven’t lost to the Cherries in four PL fixtures.

Wolves Prediction: 12th

Bruno Lage’s men will be aiming to finish in the top ten for the fourth time in five seasons. However, Wolves haven’t strengthened in vital areas, and scoring goals could be a problem. The team will be solid defensively, especially with the arrival of Nathan Collins, yet it might not be enough for the club to break into the top half of the table. In fact, some fans and pundits are skeptical that they’ll survive relegation. It would be surprising, but don’t be shocked if Wolves underperform this time around.

Will Wolves have enough to remain in the top flight for a fifth consecutive season?

Wolves to be relegated: 5.00

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)
